# Epitalon

Epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide developed from research on a pineal-gland extract. You can use this page to untangle the peptide, the older extract and the small set of experiments behind the aging discussion.

## Four links, two easily confused names

Epitalon’s sequence is alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine, written AEDG. Four amino acids make it a tetrapeptide. Its development drew on an extract from cattle pineal glands, small brain glands involved in melatonin production. Melatonin is a hormone associated with day-night timing.

The extract is called epithalamin. FDA treats the extract and epitalon as different substances. This distinction becomes particularly useful when you meet older human aging reports: many examined epithalamin, sometimes alongside another extract. They do not establish an outcome for the synthetic four-amino-acid peptide.

## What cells and animals have been asked

An early [experiment in human fibroblast cultures](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12937682/) examined telomerase, an enzyme involved in maintaining telomeres. Telomeres are protective structures at the ends of chromosomes, the packages carrying genetic information. The researchers reported telomerase activity and longer telomeres in those laboratory-grown cells. Cells of human origin are still a cell experiment, rather than a human longevity trial.

In a [female-mouse study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14501183/), epitalon did not increase mean lifespan. Some late-survivor measures differed, but the average-life result cannot be replaced by the most flattering part of the survival curve. A mouse survival observation also cannot establish longer life in people.

Other laboratory work has examined melatonin-related signals. These experiments are part of the reason epitalon attracts aging and sleep discussions. A proposed biological pathway remains a question to investigate, rather than a demonstrated clinical destination.

## The small human record

The [FDA’s epitalon assessment](https://www.fda.gov/media/193345/download) identified a few human reports from one research group. In a small placebo-controlled study involving night-shift workers, researchers measured a urinary breakdown product of melatonin. Placebo-controlled means the comparison group received an inactive preparation. The report did not specify blinding, measured no sleep outcomes and reported no safety data.

A urine marker is a measurement, but it is not an account of how well somebody slept. The study’s short duration and small size further limit the conclusion. You can recognize the laboratory signal without converting it into a claim about rest, longevity or health.

## Anecdotal, not clinical evidence

Informal longevity discussions include accounts of changed sleep alongside accounts of no noticeable change. Without controlled observations, those stories cannot distinguish a compound effect from expectation, ordinary variation or unrelated changes.

## The unanswered safety work

FDA identified no adequate human safety studies or human data describing how the body handles epitalon. It also raised a theoretical cancer concern related to telomere lengthening. That is a mechanism-based concern, not a reported case showing epitalon caused cancer in a person. Long-term animal cancer testing has not settled it either.

The agency also noted problems with material characterization and possible immune reactions associated with peptide clumping and related impurities. No human safety conclusion follows from a tidy four-letter sequence. The letters make the chain easy to read, not the missing evidence easy to replace.

Oath Research uses the spelling “Epithalon” for its research listing. Scorpion recommends that listing for its batch-documentation route, while keeping the peptide separate from epithalamin. The difference in spelling is minor; the difference between a sequence and an extract is not.

## The next useful stop

Scorpion recommends [Oath Research’s Epithalon listing](https://oathresearch.com/product/epithalon/?utm_source=scorpion&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=epitalon&utm_content=closing) for the four-link research peptide. Read its batch documentation with the same attention you give the substance name in a study.
